Hot stamping, also hot embossing, is a finishing technique for surfaces. Other than printing techniques that use paint (e.g. four-colour-print), a thin plastic foil is applied to the material with a high pressure method, using pressure and heat. It is very similar to blind embossing, with the difference that the embossing stamp or plate is heated and pressed onto a plastic foil (in the desired colour). It can be removed with heat and sticks to the printing stock. Moreover, the foils can also have structures like holographic pictures and be used for relief embossing.
